</div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I have been reflecting today on kindness as a basic character requirement we must look out for in those who come to us this season seeking for our support and votes. We must insist in electing persons who are kind into political offices. </div><div><br></div><div>In seeking for this character trait, we must be careful not to confuse wealth with kindness or kindness with ad hoc philanthropy. Let me use Senator Jarigbe Agom, and one expression of his usual kindness, to elucidate this point. </div><div><br></div><div>About two days ago, constituents and lecturers like Peter Inyali and Kalita Aruku were lamenting that the Governor and a certain APC House of Representatives member released millions of Naira to be shared to lecturers as transport fare to resume work following the calling off of the ASUU Strike, but that they didn’t see a dime. </div><div><br></div><div>In their own words, they lamented that when Senator Jarigbe Agom, a PDP member shared millions at the height of the strike as palliative, they got their share, even though they are APC members but when the APC Governor and APC House Member purportedly release theirs, they, APC members and lecturers, didn’t see shishi. </div><div><br></div><div>Now, let’s pick some lessons from this: </div><div><br></div><div>1. You can’t imitate kindness. Because Jarigbe did it, you want to do it. Imitation of kindness will always backfire. If you don’t have it, you don’t have it. Jarigbe gave at the hieght of the strike, now you want to give when strike is over. What if they died during the strike? Now, that you have even imitated and purportedly given, it is actually nothing but a fiasco. Jarigbe gave out of kindness, they are giving as a strategy to win election. </div><div><br></div><div>2. Once kindness becomes a strategy it lost its humanity and becomes manipulative. So, watch out when people use kindness to manipulate you to get something from you. Watch out for politicians, who they say habitually don’t even reply to greetings, being kind during the election season. </div><div><br></div><div>3. A kind person gives even from the little he has. Kindness is not necessarily a byproduct of wealth. Jarigbe gives because it is in his nature to give. That’s why he has projects and welfare schemes scattered over every ward in Cross River Northern Senatorial District. In fact, Senator Jarigbe has given so much to his people (he is still giving) that at times people wonder if it is the same National Assembly that their own representatives are. But the difference is that Jarigbe is kind. If you are close to him you will see how much sacrifices he makes to provide the dividends of democracy to his people. </div><div><br></div><div>4. Stop falling for ad hoc electoral philanthropy. The greatest act of wisdom you will display in this election is not to fall for electoral philanthropy. Don’t fall for this seasonal kindness designed to win your votes. These guys are not kind. They just want to swindle your votes. Our people are wiser now. I will not say don’t collect. No! Collect, but vote for someone who is truly kind. Someone who delivered. Someone who has a project in your community, not someone trying to commission one for election purposes. </div><div><br></div><div>5. Someone who is not kind will not and cannot deliver the dividends of democracy.</div>

The same crop of people that came into power as young people have tasted what power brings and have refused to relinquish those positions to more vibrant and energetic candidates. </div><div><br></div><div>When then is the future of tomorrow coming into play with these people clinging to power like it's the oxygen that will sustain their political existence? This caliber of people that should be regarded as partners in uplifting the good fortunes of Southern Senatorial District are frowning and groaning over the candidacy of many young persons who are going to be first timers.</div><div><br></div><div>The clamor for a generational shift cannot be overemphasized if we keep recycling old politicians that had the opportunity to better the lives of their constituents but deliberately chose to operate a sit-tight and tyrannical approach. </div><div><br></div><div>Our cries for a paradigm shift will be a mere charade and grossly defeated if we don't tilt our support to candidates that can speak in the NASS, State Assembly by lobbying for projects, and championing the course for their constituents.  </div><div><br></div><div>The word they say is enough for the wise </div><div><br></div><div>Vote Asuquo Ekpenyong for senate </div><div>Vote Stanley Boyce Nsemo for House of Assembly </div><div>Let's support a generational shift </div><div>Let's stick to the standard.</div>

However, good deed that is done to boosting the sagging morale, restoring dwindling hope, strengthening the weak and empowering  the handicapped is the type of community service worthy of emulation.</div><div><br></div><div>It is now a commonplace that the clique of street urchins (skolombo) or inner city's destitute is increasing astronomically in appalling consternation mostly in Calabar metropolis and its suburbs. This proportional increase is due to the increasing rate of out of school children flooding the streets on a daily basis since the cost of education is overtly high as a result of the biting economic crunch — thus, many parents and guardians find it quite difficult to either fend or afford the tuition charges of their children and wards.</div><div><br></div><div>Like many other children roaming about the streets, Bridget and her little sibling, Joseph, pupils of Gold Spice Best Academy, were seen loitering Ikot Uduak street that links Timber Market  at Akai Efa, Calabar Municipal, during school hours. As confirmed, Bridget and Joseph were not in school because they have been driven for not being able to pay school fees. But on that day, luck shone its light on them as Hon. Asuquo Ekpenyong, the southern senatorial candidate of the Cross River All Progressive Congress (APC) was on gully-site intervention inspection. Having his attention drawn to the predicament of these children by Mr. Stanley Boyce Nsemo, a candidate for the Calabar Municipal state constituency, Hon. Ekpenyong did the needful and the children have resumed school.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div>Someone asked how much is the school fee while we were chatting. Albeit, the amount is immaterial. What's consequential is the fact that the kids are back to school. Worthy of note is that these pupils were out of school over nonpayment of school fees/charges and now, the burden is off their shoulders and their further studies are assured.</div><div><br></div><div>The art of living entails being a good citizen. A good citizen does not shy away when called upon to help. He cares for the feelings of others and gives active aid whenever there is a need . Christ, our Lord and Saviour puts it thus: " Do unto others as you would have others do unto you." Mr. Asuquo Ekpenyong has shown with his good deed that we should remember that other people have as much right to happiness and the good things of this world as we. </div><br></p><p>Some days ago, the social media space in Cross River was saturated with what was described as “Homecoming” for the member representing Akamkpa/Biase Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Daniel Effiong Asuquo who happens to be the candidate of the Labour Party for the position of Southern Senatorial District in the forthcoming 2023 General Election.</p><p>In that gathering, one of the highlights was the assurance of Hon. Dansuki to his followers that he is going to work for the “Back to South” agenda that he had previously jettisoned when he failed to collapse structures in his former party, the PDP, and support his brother from the Same Senatorial district so he could settle for NASS which eventually led to the zone losing the primaries due to the lack of unity amongst the key actors.</p><p>Having failed in that direction, can the Honourable Member be seen to be “Honourable” in his new political evangelism of putting the interest of the Southern people first in his quest to try and win their favour in his new ambition? Can the South trust someone who speaks from both sides of the mouth to be their Senator come 2023? Can the South trust a leader who doesn’t believe in the principle of fairness and equity?</p><p>All of these questions are begging for answers as the days ahead promise to be intriguing and interesting as political parties kickstart their respective campaigns.</p>
