The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has come to the rescue of Professor Itse Sagay (SAN), who was alleged to have made some negative remark about President Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption war.
Professor Itse Sagay allegedly described President Buhari's anti-corruption efforts as "selective" and "cosmetic" and went ahead to accuse the APC and its members of corruption amongst others.
Leadership reports that the respected legal scholar in an interview published in the Nigerian Tribune of Sunday, December 20, was quoted to have described President Buhari's anti-corruption efforts as"selective" and "cosmetic" and went ahead to accuse the APC and its members of corruption amongst others.
The APC in its reaction contained in a statement issued in Abuja, on Monday, December 21, described the said interview as 'concocted.'
The party said: "We are mindful of the axiom: When you fight corruption, it fights back. For the record, Mr. Sagay, a professor of law, well known constitutional lawyer and head of President Buhari's Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption, says the newspaper's interview credited to him is concocted and represents a desperate attempt to discredit President Buhari's anti-corruption war. He challenged the reporter and paper's editors to provide the public with a tape recording of the so-called interview."
The statement further hinted that the party's national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, also used the medium to plead with Nigerians who acknowledged the advantage in the fight President Buhari's government is waging against corruption, to remain resolute and not be distracted by this plot to discredit it by agents of corruption.
"President Buhari in his May 29 inaugural speech declared, "I belong to everybody and I belong to nobody"; that position remains unchanged. The syndicated and sponsored campaign suggesting a "selective" and "cosmetic" anti-corruption fight by the present administration should be seen as a plot meant to distract the citizenry from the successful ongoing war to catch looters and recover Nigeria's stolen common wealth," it said.
The party in a reaction to the allegations by the sponsors of the concocted interview that members of the APC are corrupt, pointed out that the sponsors of the concocted interview to prove its claims.
APC said the country and the international organization are still amazed over the mouthwatering stealing and diversion of public funds earmarked to buy needed arms and ammunition for our Armed Forces to fight the Boko Haram terrorists group and secure the nation's territorial integrity.
"The president's assurance that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) will be encouraged to publish details of voluntary return of looted funds to the federal government's coffers is evidently causing panic in the camp of looters," it said.
President Buhari during his inauguration in May 29, made it known that he was committed to fighting corruption. This commitment is now being manifested with many who have held political positions before being arrested or placed under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The President is not alone in this fight against corruption as it would be recalled that the Inter-Party Advisory Council had declared its full support for President Buhari in his anti-corruption war.
